Meet Noah, our rescued, orphaned Kune Kune pig - who escapes the summer heat by lounging in his mud spa and scratching itchy spots on trees. Noah came to live with us as a small 3-5 month old piglet after being adopted by a family with a small pot belly pig who raised him in their house. He and his brother were originally "rescued" by a Pender Veterinarian Assistant after the farmer brought them to the vet clinic following the death of their mother. He was taught to drink out of an eye dropper initially, after losing his birth mom very young. He then transitioned to a baby bottle when he was a little bigger and able to tolerate a larger bottle.
Noah lives in a small house built from reclaimed lumber and roofing tiles. Its 2-feet walls are stuffed with old feedbags filled with straw from his bedding. The main compartment of the little house is made from a reclaimed calf hutch and the door was repurposed from the half-door to the feed room (it now has a full door). One of our long time volunteers, Jeremy Fedors, built "Noah's ARC" out of mostly reclaimed materials.
Noah mainly eats a a cooked corn and oat mush with leftover, donated produce, and pumpkins we grow here at the farm from seeds we harvested from the pumkins the year before. The pumpkins are in line with our sustainability goals - to produce as much produce as can feed the animals most of the year. We are always looking for donated pumpkins to store and use for the winter feedings.
In the meantime, we are happy Noah is staying cool - entertaining himself in his mud spa!
